White-footed Black House Ant - HEAD landcare research
The White-footed Black House Ant is commonly found in the Auckland area. The White-footed Black House Ant
can present a challenge to treat as it likes to nest buildings' walls, ceiling spaces and underneath houses/buildings.
The name of this Ant is from white hairs that are on its legs, giving it the appearance of being "white footed".
The White-footed Black House Ant feeds mostly from the plants in your garden and may have a symbiotic relationship
with other insects on these plants. The fact that there is an unlimited food supply in your garden and year-round warmth
in your house means this ant can have signifcantly large nests (measured in kilograms). Mostly the White-footed Black House
Ant becomes a problem in your house when it searches for water. As the ant mostly has access from inside your walls or
under your house they can "just appear" suddenly from behind a toilet and suddenly surround it to get water for the nest.
Then as quickly as they have appeared they can disappear. As this ant likes warmth it often tracks along the electrical wiring,
sometimes to the end of the wires where it can come into contact with live wires, creating a possible FIRE HAZARD .
When the ants are following the electrical wiring they tend to fall out of light fittings, light switches and powerplugs
on the wall. A feature of the White-footed Black House Ant is that the workers do not always feed their food to the queens.
This means it doesnt respond as well to baits as other ants. There is a specific bait from BAYER for this
this ant. Maxforce
NEST: What does a nest look like? There will be a lot of ants with many white pupa. As the choose somewhere warm
e.g. ceiling, the pupa are normally just all over surfaces. You will be lucky to see the queen (s) but if you do she will be
a wingless ant with a long abdomen. If the nest is disturbed it can be relocated very quickly, perhaps
to an inaccessable place. Aces suggests you do not disturb the nest and call a pest contoller
PLAN OF ACTION: Following an inspection the nests can be located in the building and a plan of action formulated. The treatment for the
White-footed Black House Ant hinges on access to the nests in your building. If access to the nest is possible, then the nest should be immediately
destroyed or removed from the building. If access is not possible then baiting should take place before further treatments are undertaken as you do
not want to end up with an isolated ( by chemicals) and stressed nest. Almost as important as the chemical treatment of the ants is the removal of
their food source, or removal of access to their food source. These are often hedges or bushes or sap-producing plants in the customer's garden.
If the owner wishes to keep the plants then the plants must be surrounded with ANT STOP G. Once the nest has been destroyed or baited a standard
treatment for the building is recommended.
